Summary...
We all yearn to be free, but what can freedom really mean under such circumstances as these? Even if we receive an equal share of what's around us. It may be fair, but we're unlikely to be satisfied, much less inspired. There is no political solution to this problem. Politics is just organized violence. What's given to one is always taken from another. None can be fully satisfied, because every experience is by necessity a compromise. And every desire is merely pre-programmed into us at conception, only to be discovered later as we interact with our environment. A solution can come in only one of two ways...
Modification of our minds or our environment. Both are only fully achievable through technology. Drugs can make almost any reality feel significantly better than it is. Drugs like ecstasy, cocaine, heroin - do not create a fake reality as such, but take the veil down hiding what is already there. In different ways, they each reset our satiation to life. Giving us new eyes to see. But once seen, we no longer want to go back to our old satiated lives. And so we easily become addicted and depended on the world they have shown us. Better drugs will only increase our ability to see. And so too will biotechnology and nanotechnology. But we need that vision of utopia to be more permanent, and less dependent on the transient effects of a drug. But until our technologies can provide for our life support, without the need to enslave each other through the violence of politics, we need to stay sober enough to help build such a future for us all. We have a duty to do our share of the lifting, and resist the temptation of opting out into the bliss of conscious awareness before time. Either through the ever changing technologies of drugs, or the simple discipline of meditation. A future where we are free. Where we are enlightened and where we can ascend in consciousness together is the futre we should work toward.
Computing, virtual reality or nanotechnology could free us from the other half of our bondage. Allow us unlimited environments with unlimited freedom. And without compromising anyone else in the process. Too often the rich are seen as surfing upon the suffering of the poor. Whether true or not, only technology can truly break this cycle. Releasing all from the bondage our genes, our environment and our society impose.
Nobody wants to be born ugly or stupid or infirm. Neither do we want to be mortal, limited or enslaved. Yet these will always be our destiny unless we use our minds and our technology to rise above them. Even the beautiful and the gifted only really receive those gifts from society at the expense of everyone else. Without all their definitions of absolute beauty and perfection, the rest of us would have no comparison upon which to be judged. Though our inner aesthetics may suspect otherwise. The same for the sick and the stupid. We are all bound together as one, yet we each feel life as an individual. It is no great mystery to know what we want. Or rather, what our genetic programming says that we want. We want beauty, intelligence, wit, health, immortality, freedom, wisdom, empathy, compassion and so on. We just don't have the technology to create an environement like that quite yet. Or to modify the genetic source of all these desires. But as each year goes by we will get closer.
So the answer to all our dreams is not to be found in the violence of politics or religion, but by using our minds and our technology to rise above them. We just need to have faith in our own dreams. When we finally experience the freedom only technology can bring, we can then choose to come together again in an atmosphere of love and consent. Rather than through the forced bondage of our social dependency, or our personal bondage to the aesthetics of our genes. The miracle of human consciousness and human emotion, intertwined with our technology is a destiny worth believing in. |
